These were found in Civil War camps. The first two (pictures 1-3) are about the same diameter as some US Eagle buttons. One is 19.4 mm and the other is 19.8 mm. The larger disc on the first is 3 mm thick. The larger disc on the second one is 4 mm thick. The smaller discs look exactly like rivets. Each has an eagle with arrows in one talon and an olive branch in the other on the larger disc. I have also found some with plain fronts and one with a flower on the front (pictures 4 and 5). One has some silver plate remaining. Most are much thinner than the eagle ones and they are various diameters. (The coin in the last two pictures is a nickel. Too much glare.) Does anyone know what these were used for? Thanks.

I am guessing that they are bridle rosettes or something like that. Those are neat...d2

I've never seen rivets with eagles on them. Or rivets that large... Saddle decorations?

We usually call the smaller, plain ones knapsack rivets. They were also used on saddles and bayonet scabbards.

Cool finds.
