In my opinion it looks more like a civilian button. It doesn't seem like the type of button the military used. It could be from a solder who was not in uniform. No matter what, it certainly is a great find! happy hunting!

Very pretty button, I'd put it 3rd quarter 18th century. It is a civilian pattern, the earlier ones a lot of times had 2 holes in the back to vent gases from.

There is some kind of white caulky powder inside the button. You can see where the patina is so thin at the very top that it is disintegrating away. I have found button bottoms like this with a white caulky substance. Did they fill the buttons with some kind of white caulky substance? I am very carefully and minimally cleaning it.
