Have been waiting for the beans to be harvested in my one "Colonial" era spot (and yes, I realize that Southeast Missouri Colonial isn't the same as New York or even Louisiana Colonial but hey....it's Colonial to me!). Not a lot left here any more, what is left is all deep and hard to find. Guess it's time to do some research because this place is about done. Hunted for a few hours before dark the day the beans came out, went back for a marathon 6 1/2 hour hunt with no breaks the next day and a few more hours yesterday. Was hoping for another Spanish or half dime but the only coin was an 1865 Indian. Not in great shape but a first for me, oldest Indian so far for and first "fatty". One button find gave made my heart skip a beat. It was bent by the plow but when I brushed away some dirt, I could see something that looked a little like a big bird with a chain from a collar on it's long skinny neck (didn't have my glasses on...lol). My wishful thinking made me wonder if it couldn't be an African bird with a chain....maybe a slavery or post-slavery button (yeah I know, really grabbing at straws there). Turned out to be a couple of hunting hounds, one sitting and another laying behind it. Still a cool button, would have been a lot cooler if the plow hadn't hit it sometime in the past! My best find was my second 1820-40 US great coat button from the site, this one with intact shank. Also found an awesome early thimble (as well as another later one that was bent, and the broken piece of one that matches a piece I found this spring). Very last find was the back half of a large skeleton key.......that matches a piece I found this spring and had placed in a display of relics that I gifted to the property owner. Awesome to be able to put that piece together for him.....kind of wish I'd kept it for myself now...lol. Total finds were 22 or 23 buttons, the Indian, 2 1/2 thimbles, a cool little piece of lead made into a pencil, one small buckle and another maybe-buckle, the key piece, some wonder-what-that-was's, a few early tacks and an Oshkosh-bgosh overall button. One little spherical dress button was missing the back....or so I thought. It had been pushed in and was laying reversed inside the button. Removed it and will put the button back together again. Nice because the backmark and design around the shank were nicely preserved this way.
Happy hunting all! Now back to hunting for silver.....lacking 5 for my goal this year.
