Good afternoon, Took a ride today and a short walk at one of the arrowhead hunting spots that my Grandfather showed me when I was around 10. Found a few flakes, & this fossilized bone, which I believe to be Bison ???? also it looks like it was broken and butchered . Do you think those are cut marks on the surface ????? It is how I picked it up.havent even washed it off yet .. Any opinions will be appreciated. Thanks !

if they are tool marks, you just set back the time line of human occupation in north America...

that's all I know...sorry...nice find..

How can you possibly look at that piece of broken stuff and say it's a Buffalo bone?

That's a serious question even though it sounds snobby lol

Mr. Helton, how can you look at a picture of it and say it is not?

That's a serious question even though it sounds snobby.

I dont think either of you are being snobby ,and no offense taken.
I should have been a little more clear to begin with. The reason I look at it and think it might be a Bison bone,is bcause I found it at a Buffalo slough, and the reason I thought those might be butchering marks ,is because there is a large campsite next to it,where my Grandfather found alot of points & tools. Also the reason I say "Bison" is because the bone is fossilized which I think ? would predate the buffalo , maybe I'm wrong, but that is why I posted it,to hear other theroys,

I thought bison and buffalo were the same animal.

I just don't think "Bison Bill's Wild West Show" has quite the same ring to it!

pictured is a water buffalo lol

Man, so this is what its like to get raked over the coals :laughing7: You got me !!,here I am trying to spout off stuff from memory,of what I thought I learned in Highschool, when I'm sitting at a computer and the web is at my finger tips. So I looked it up,,, Bison & Buffalo are from the same family ,but are different, Bison are the ones that ran the plains by the millions. I promise to you all that ,I will sure think twice about posting a fossilized bone again :occasion14:

Wikepedia says that the Bison is commonly called the American buffalo...not to be confused with cape or water buffalo which are in other countries. So the animal in the US that we call buffalo is a bison...same animal.

I don't know enough about the subject to doubt you, Charlie.. Just having some fun.. Keep the fossilized bone posts coming :)

The little mark looks like a cut to me.

Ah that's interesting, thank you! I hope you're right and that you found something really great!

Buffalo are in Africa, Bison are in North America
Bison Buffalo are in America,Cape Buffalo are in Africa....like Polar Bears and Black Bears......

Not sure what a Buffalo Slough is but all over the west are Buffalo Jumps.I have taken Bison Buffalo with modrn Archery Equipt. and can tell you that not many Native Americans took Buffalo solely with Bow and arrow, the great majority I beleive was run over cliffs

Ive wondered before how much game was killed with bow and arrow by Native Americans...I don't believe its as much as people think...I bet they killed a lot of small game ,like rabbits, with just a rock...taking that animal with a bow had to be an awesome experience for you Kuger.

Sorry your wrong. The scientific name for North American "Buffalo" is Bison Bison. They are Bison. Polar bears while in the same family are not the same as black bears as the are classified in a different genus And there is much evidence that plains Indians took bison mostly with spear and bow. Not over cliffs.

Keep looking for fossils and keep posting your finds! Always going to be critics and people like me who criticize the critics. This forum is supposed to be educational, friendly, and fun. I am sure the BISON BISON will grin and BEAR it!!!
