Yesterday was a nice mild day after a week of days either hovering around 0 or cold rain torrents. I had a friend's AT Gold and my Compadre so I forced my kids off the computers (grumbling ensued) and took them on a detecting trip to a nearby school playground. I shortened my Compadre and connected the headphones Skiwhiz, a member of this forum, had graciously given me. I have to admit it took me a bit to shift gears to adapt back to using the AT Gold. I had used it for a while as a loaner before I got the Compadre and had to relearn it all over again. We hit the playground area with the three kids taking turns on the Compadre. For simplicity I had the Compadre set to the $0.01 mark. I got the first good target, a dime, and made sure each of them listened to it on the Compadre so they'd know what a good target sounded like. I also swung my wedding ring under the coil so they could hear that. I also called them over when I had what I thought was a good signal and let them swing over that as well. My youngest (6) found a nickel, and then he found a coin spill of 4 quarters. He was strutting cocky as the "leader". I found two nickels, two dimes and two quarters. We moved on to a baseball field and were detecting just inside the outfield. Since the youngest was getting cold the plan was to work our way across the outfield and then detect back to the truck. My oldest (10) got a signal and it turned out to be junk. I told him that "You never know what you will find next. That's what makes it fun." Two minutes later he said: "I've got a signal". I had showed him the difference between a crackling trash signal and a sold good signal. He said it was solid. I waved the AT Gold over it and it read around 62 and was a solid signal. We dug down and about 3" down we found a clump of mud with what looked like silver in the bright sunlight. Cleaning it off my daughter yelled: "It's a ring!" We cleaned it some more and found a nice monogram signet ring. Looking at the band with my lupe I found the 10K mark! I said it was gold. Boy he was pumped (and daughter was jealous because it was a girl's ring). We were about 10 yards from third base.
