I bought this at an estate sale. I have no clue what it goes to. It is about a foot long and is made of aluminum. The black knob on top moves a plate back and forth. The plate has two bolts with springs attached so that something could be held in place. It has a bolt with a wing nut so that the entire assembly could be attached to the main machine - whatever that would be. Any ideas?

I think it is for sharpening a saw.

I want to say chain saw, but may be for a hand saw but I doubt it

It's been a long time since I've seen the chain saw filing guide, but a image search should help ID it.

Another similar tool bolts along side of a bench grinder, and it sets the sharpening angle on a wood plane blade.

You could be right about it being a saw sharpening clamp. The spring part of it is adjustable for various thicknesses from 0 to about 1-1/2 inches.
I've never had any luck with Google image searches when I have uploaded an image. I did a regular image search with "saw sharpening clamp" but didn't find one like this.
If I can figure out exactly what this is and what it goes on, I can probably make a few dollars on it. It would also help if it had some numbers or writing on it but it doesn't.

I just noticed that the knob moves the rack of teeth, back and forth.

I would say that eliminates any guide for a saw.

At this point, I'd say it is for sharpening those thin flat blades on a wood plane. The teeth make sense, as you need good control on sharpening those precise cutting blades

Wood Plane jig I bet:

Are these pics somewhat similar in function? "Sears Craftsman" is what I searched, because I know I have one here, lost. I still have the base bracket bolted to my old Sears bench grinder, but don't know where the jig is

Yes, that's it! It is a Sears/Craftsman. I found the model number #33519595 or 9-19595. It's called a Tool Holder Grinding Attachment. They still sell some parts for them. Thanks for your help CTwoods.
