My son Chris and I were hunting in central Kentucky last year and Chris found this nice Confederate martingale plate.

I am just getting around to posting a photo of it.

Yes that is the leather that is still attached to the plate. This was found in a swampy (always wet) area near a spring, and the leather has been wet for the last 140+ years. My son has since preserved the leather, and the plate is in excellent condition.

The plate was approximately 18" in the ground, and Chris' Nautilus DMC II Ba reached out and touched it.

The minnie ball is in the photo to show the relative size of the martingale plate.

geesh that thing is HUGE.awesome shape too! congrats brass? copper?

The plate is some sort of copper / brass alloy. Not sure. Chris had it looked at by an "expert" at the North South Trader Civil War show, and the "expert" said it is definately Confederate. He said that he could tell by the way the plate is attached to the leather.

sweet! what a find!

by the way...not sure of your age and what kind of music you listen to or like. But,one of my favorite bands was from KY.they were a hard rock/metal band called LethaL from Erlanger, kentucky.
here is the link on youtube. My apologies if this isn't your style of music. they remind me of a band called Queensryche

That martingale is awesome! How is it attached to the leather, iron or brass hooks? Can you show the back? HH

The plate is attached to the leather by three pin shaped pieces made from the same material as the plate (copper/brass alloy).

Sorry my son has the plate at his place in East TN, and I do not have a photo of the back of the leather showing the pins.

SUPERB RECOVERY there guys! WTG!

Jim, that is neat.
