Why is there a hole?
Somebody punched a hole so they could wear the coin on a string around their neck so they wouldn't lose it. Pockets were yet to be invented and coin purses cost money, so poor people had to punch holes in coins and litterally wear them like beads on a string.

I don't think there's much evidence to support multiple coins being worn on strings by poor people in Roman times so they didn't lose them.

A rather more likely explanation is that they were used as adornments on clothing and other items, or as necklace charms in both contemporary and later times (sometimes in loyalty to the depicted Emperor if contemporary).

Another theory is. that armoured soldiers may have threaded them onto their weapon, where they can provide a mixture of decoration and extra protection.

I have found coins with holes in them here. Not shot but small purposely made holes. Iv heard all sorts of reasons. I found this but I don't think it covers all possible reasons. One of those debated mysteries at times.
