Construction Pile's....(Up-Dated)

I was on my way down to pay my Dad a visit at the hospital, started therapy today. They're expanding the parking lot for the rail commuter's at one of the station's.I've been eyeing the fill pile's for about a month now back and forth to work...Anyway,I couldn't help but to pull off and take a peak. These piece's were sitting on the pile,I'm pretty sure most are from the early 1900's but I'm not sure about the green bottle....any idea's? I'm no bottle hound but I do like finding them any chance I can get....Thank's for lookin'

No not at all Chong...The place's that used to occupy this land were house's that were torn down.Alot of CW action was happenin' in the area at the time but no park.Believe me when they finish it'll be posted.....Go figure!!!!....HH!!

Civil, I'd definitely be going back and searching. If they are going to haul off the fill, find out where-hopefully that area won't be posted.

As for the syrup bottle, there are several on Ebay.

and,
Thank's stoney....too bad this one is cracked...They're running a new drainage down to the canal for the creek and I think they're going to use the same fill to cover it up....Sound's like more broken glass to me....I'll try and get back before they start moving it again....HH!!

Re: Construction Pile's....(Up-Dated)

Had to go into work today for a couple hour's but on my way home I noticed they added more pile's from the site to the same area...They have pretty much graded the place out and are getting ready to asphalt the joint.I pulled in and started poking around and found these two piece's...Damn shame the heavy equipment can't be any nicer to bottle's.Spent about 15 min.'s eyeballin' the place and found these piece's.Thought the first one was a door knob but ended up being a candle holder...Second piece was recently broken....Still...need to keep my eye on the pile's,gotta be some more unbroken one's in that mess somewhere....Any idea on the date of the "bottle bottom" ?Thank's for lookin'!!!

Re: Construction Pile's....(Up-Dated)

whats a glass salt??? and is that a pontil on the wine base?

Re: Construction Pile's....(Up-Dated)

I believe a glass salt was set at a table setting for each person. It contained enough salt so that a person could dip items like celery or a hard boiled egg into it.
I believe it was also called open salt, salt cellar, dip and salter. They made them in various forms. Cut glass, pressed glass, cobalt glass, etc. Some even looked like a chicken on a nest. The chicken was the cover.

Re: Construction Pile's....(Up-Dated)

;) Yup, that's a salt cellar! They used them back before non-clumping salt. They were set on a table- one for several, and they usually came w/ a tiny little silver, bone, (or some sort of) spoon. They weren't really for individual use (for dipping into) but rather as a shared item- like a salt shaker today. But that may just be on fancy tables. I've been a chef for over a quarter century, and have worked in places that still used them. They're VERY cool! Too bad you didn't see a little spoon anywhere.... Not bloody likely, eh?

Re: Construction Pile's....(Up-Dated)

cool deal. so is that what those hen things are??? the bigger ones the size of a hand, like carnival glass or something? my friends mom collects them. nice find by the way. keep an eye on them piles....

Re: Construction Pile's....(Up-Dated)

ya know, I don't know what those hens are for. I always figured they were decorative, but covered salt cellars might be the answer. The larger ones are for those who smoke too much and can't taste anything any more! ;D Or...perhaps just decorative.. dunno

The larger hen's (one piece) were candy container's,found one last year at an old homesite (now cellar) that had a bottle dump down the ridge. From the 30's-40's,had a cardboard bottom on it.J.H. Millstein & Co. worth around $30 or so,maybe that's what you all are talking about....Thank's for the ID Abbey...
