Here's a WW2 Japanese hand grenade. I have only found a few of these. This one was in the best condition. Recently I found a cache of 4-5 japanese grenades.

Anyone familiar with these? Is that part of the pin?

Very cool but spooky also.

Yeah that's a pin on the Japanese grenade, you pull it then strike the cap to activate it. (Don't try it, it could explode immediately) That one is probably still live and I'd be VERY CAREFUL with it, they weren't very well made. It's a Type 97 fragmentation grenade. Those things can be very unstable and even after 66 years still VERY deadly. I wouldn't try pulling the fuse out either, best thing to do is call an expert to get rid of it safely.

The American one has no fuse, and is safe to handle, but check for a redish substance inside which would be TNT residue.

Be careful out there.

My goodness.

Those are awesome finds, but they make me nervous just looking at a picture of them, especially the Jap grenade.

Cool, but deadly.

Thanks for the info.

I think it's easy for us to forget that there's so much live ordinance in the ground in many countries, especially since it's not that common here. People are killed or maimed by it all the time though, and occasionally it's relic hunters like us. I've even heard of a guy killed here in the states by a CW cannonball he was trying to defuse in his basement. It's very important to always remember that just because it's been in the ground a long time doesn't mean it isn't potentially dangerous. If you have any doubts, call the bomb squad, it's better to lose out on a relic, than lose an arm or your life.
