I'm still cleaning the finds from today's hunt, but I just had to post this. I thought it was a typical suspenders clip until I started cleaning it and I saw the design. It took some very careful tooth-picking to get the detail to come out without losing the design, but it was well worth the effort!

It appears to depict a team of firemen being directed by the chief to put out a burning house. It even has the old-style horse-drawn pump wagon! The back has a large amount of iron encrustation and I thought it might have been a pin, but it looks like it has the usual swiveling teeth plate from an adjuster clip.

No writing unfortunately and I can't find any similar designs online, but I know this site was abandoned by the late 1880's so this has to be from before that. I wish I could say there was more to come from this spot, but it was pretty well hammered before I got to it. This was in a particularly iron infested area so they probably missed the quiet mid-tone and I'm glad they did!

Impressive find. Congrats

Those are the best finds. A little time capsule about the people who lived there long ago. That is a unique clip. Congrats

Thank you! The rest of today's finds are from a cellar hole on the same abandoned road in the woods, but one that was abandoned no later than 1830 which is very exciting. Low find density and I think it was also hit before me, but they missed some very interesting relics which I'll have in a separate post soon. Today was a great detecting day!

What an interesting piece congrats

Wow very cool! Congrats! :icon_thumleft:

Very cool find indeed , great cleaning job as well , 'sometimes finding is the easier part' .

That is great. I love the detail that went into the design. Congrats.

What does it say on the left end .. Something like Hess FD

Very cool find. Nice job cleaning it up. When did the Volunteer Fire Companies start wearing those helmets? That is definitely before horse drawn pumpers. I'm going to forward this post to a fellow hunter who is also a fire chief with a volunteer fire house here in Pennsylvania.

Thank you! Definitely let me know what your friend says. I'm curious if this is something that firefighters in the local brigades could order for themselves or of it came from a specific company. Not too long ago I found a delegate badge from the 1888 New York State Fireman's Association conference so maybe this is another piece that a local obtained from one of those conferences.

The imprint is weaker on that end but I'll see if I can get a better photo under different light. On the first pass I thought it was a building but I could be wrong.
