Did you run a google map of the place yet? I have found old fencelines, homes, shacks and clearings just by checking out the area. If you can locate the neighbor of the property that is a good start. There is some old homesteads In the area. The Lake was not in the general area until the late 1960's. So It was not an option for a water source earlier than that. Check this picture of the San Jac,
One thing interesting is that when the Northern settlers had to travel to Houston for trading and such is that they had to stop somewhere in between to camp to make the run. Houston was founded in the 1830's sometime and there was many groups that made there way there in to town for goods, money, fun, etc.
I have done some research and If they left from here further North, Humble would have made a nice camp giving that the San Jan ran sort of like this picture. Giving Lake Conroe or Houston was there.
