Hello again all,

I had a few really good finds last night and today, but I did not get a chance to metal detect last night and today. Great when you have good finds and not even detecting eh?

Last night a family member of mine had a flat tire at work. He did not have a jack. He called his son who had a four wheel drive to get to him and he picked me up to take him to the spot. When I got there I noticed a pit filled with old equipment and scaps. My uncle got on the horn and got permission for me to get anything I wanted since it was going to be covered up. What I found was a pile of smaller guage copper wire that I cut and plenty of already cut pieces of it lying around as well. I have a picture of about 1/6 of it stripped so far. All of this came from this place minus the one huge piece of wire in the picture that I found Metal Detecting an old abandoned home in the woods.

In a way this is kinda odd. Coal mines and many other places here are having a problem with peps thieving thier copper. We even had 3 peps die this year trying to steal wire out of transformers that they thought were turned off ** Side note glad the recycler has known me since I was a child, otherwise I would probably be getting a visit from the police in the current climate around here right now. But then again who knows. Since most of these wires are smaller perhaps I would not have any trouble no matter what.** After all that is what is strange. When I get done I will probably have around 60 to 70 lbs of copper wire. Plus I added 5 more pounds of copper pipe not shown in the picture. This pit has been there to see for a while. The items thrown in the pit have been out for a while. Yet peps could have gotten this copper by just asking. In the mean time we have a bunch...and I mean a bunch. Enough to make it on the local news TV and papers more than once this year of thieves stealing copper. They have been stealing large wires of course. They are too lazy to get free copper in smaller sizes I guess. Not enough to just be a thief, you got to be a lazy one and steal things that people really need. And not put in a little bit of work to get a nice little haul for free.

I am at a loss about some of these wires though. IF ANYONE knows how to tell what wires are white copper coated, aluminum, Platinum...etc...would sure love to know how to tell. I also have a picture of one of the white wires. Most might just be aluminum, but who knows. A lot of this equipment was older and most likely expensive way back when it was bought. Nice to know how I could figure out when wire is platinum or not.

Ok this leads to the other great find. IF you have seen some of my posts on "Everything Else" I am starting a small marble collection. I plan to over time try to fill a 5 gallon fish tank with marbles. My daughter loves marbles and shiney rocks. *** BONUS was able to find a rock tumbler set finally today for one of her Christmas presents *** Anyways, I know it takes a long time to get marbles while you are metal detecting. But since I know this is a large task to get that many I will also purchase some at yard sales etc. If they are good different variety that will make the fish tank a unique collection, and obviously if the price is right. Not really collecting valuable marbles, just something pretty for her to enjoy.

My uncle works most nights, so today I went looking for a jack for him at the flea market / swap meet..whatever its called where you come from. On my way back I noticed a guy sitting roadside selling and some jacks. I was able to find a jack for him at a reasonable price. While he was getting some change for me I took a closer look at what he was selling and found this 24 oz. peanut butter jar full of marbles. They are all newer marbles according to him, good part is they are mostly unique and not all the same color etc. Since I bought the jack he just through in the Marbles for free.

Great day and night all in all.

Thanks for the read all,

Hi Post!!

Well, you got your marble collection going now, cool!! A nice little assortment. Definitely look at garage sales etc, you'll find some older ones there from time to time.

The silver wire is most likely aluminum. They used that for a while but stopped now in most areas, made it against code. I believe because it corroded too easily and that became dangerous. You should be able to tell by the weight, aluminum is a lot lighter than copper comparison wise.

Best of luck to you my friend!

Smiles!

Try heating the wire with a match or something like that. If it melts...it's aluminum. If it retains heat for an unusual amount of time, it's copper. Some wire used to be silver, about 12 years ago one member of our crew replaced some of it and kept the silver for himself (of course, he wasn't stupid), but it is so rare now that I don't think I'll ever see it again.

Good job of recycling the copper wire. Wire thieves around here in great number, too. Occasionally they get fried, which is fitting for such a crime (fried = electrocuted by the live circuit they are touching, not talking about the electric chair--but has the same effect).

yup those are new marbles ,fer sure but looks like youre lookin, lolol keep it up youll find the gem sooner or later,,, i sold 15 of my best marbles last year and bought my wife a new car....now she dont care when i drag in the bagfull of mibs....lolol... go figure...

Post...great finds....I save and scrap out copper as well...big money for it right now, so if I am digging it up, might as well save it and make a little off of it. I also save all my brass and lead. Which reminds me, I got to sort thru and clean up some stuff and lug it to the mainland to scrap out, also found about 10 10 ft. lengths of copper pipe that someone threw out at the dump here (that may get me a visit from the P.D. when I scrap that out...:) )
Until you get a large amount of marbles, try using a large brandy snifter to save them in, makes for a nice display. I use them to save all the interesting colors of sea glass I find with my kids.
And with your new collection no one can accuse you of losing your marbles!! (bad, but couldn;t resist...:) )

Nice finds and story! How much is copper these days? HH, Mike

the way it's going, it won't be long before copper is considered a precious metal. cool marbles as well...

Pretty neat Post! Nice story....wire theft is a problem here around Pikeville also, several ppl have been electrocuted trying to steal copper from the mines!

My boss at work had his new ford explorer stolen from the parking lot at J.C. Penny over the weekend, two purse snatches at Walmart, an "armed" robbery with a clawhammer in the bathroom at Walmart!!!

Makes me wonder what the world is coming to.....ppl CAN'T be that desperate for a buck?! My boss had just finished up xmas shopping and had the back of the explorer loaded down with gifts...... :(

Hi Postalrevnant
Almost everyday in the police blotter I read about about copper wire theft. Nice snag. My daugter loves them marbles too.

I took in some aluminum cans today. I was told #1 copper started at $1.25 a lb. He payed more if I brought more. I asked him for an example of if I brought 30 lbs today and he said he did not want to speculate. He would wait till I brought it and value it.

In Knoxville at the Alcoa Recycling center it is probably around $3 a pound. My cousin works in Knoxville and he says he saw a sign for $2.75 a pound for #1 copper.

Now I am a little bit confused about the rating though. The recycler said that #1 is copper wire the size of or larger than a pencil lead. Is this true if anyone knows? I have been trying to google and not having much luck finding out. I am guessing they mean that size for a single strand. So example if I had a big piece of wire comprised of smaller strands it would probably be #2 and less in price?

Thanks for all the responses. It's pretty cool to know that other thieves got zapped. I know that is not cool to say that, but I really hates me a thief.

Plus thank you for all those great responses. I do indeed have some great friends here on Tnet.

you should get #1 price for what you have. I had some like that a few years back and got #1 price. I believe #1 is clean copper, no solder, insulation, other metal etc.

Thanks Post,
Those are cetainly most unusal finds. I really like the marbles, looks like you have your marbles all in a row:).

I'm always bringing home some sort of metal I found while detecting. Just the other day, I brought home a huge piece of lead. Wonder if it is worth anything?

Thanks again for the post and pictures.
