Logically speaking, get a gold ring or gold plated medal or coin; place it on the ground, and pass the coil over your target at about 6 or 8 inches and SEE what your particular machine is registering. THAT will be your indication. Just like testing poptops, nickels, silver coins, etc.

Thanks Shortstack, I have done that and get a reading of 27 9 out of 10 times, but my ring is light, I am wondering if the size of the ring, a class ring vs a small gold ring would be different. Just wondering 'cause you dont here a lot of folks talking about gold finds with this particular machine. TMAN...

The conductivity of a material is what the machine is reacting to. The SIZE of the object will give you the STRENGTH of the machine's reaction.(as in blowing the wax out of your ears) The conductivity will give you the TID number. The conductivity of gold, silver, copper, platinum, lead, iron, etc produces the unique number for the particular metal. Silver has more conductivity than gold.

Thanks for that explanation. That answers my question as to where gold lies on my TID read out. I have dug a ton of tabs in the 35-49 range and that will hopefully reduce the amount of trash and allow more time for hunting. What is gold reading on your deleon?

tmanfromtexas,

How is that 3 X 18 coil working out? Joe

Hey Joe, good to here from ya. I love it. I can hit an open field and cover some serious footage. The only down side is the loss of depth, but for hunting football fields and soccer fields, depth isnt the most important thing. I still dig targets up to about 6 inches so its all good. TMAN...

Gold rings go from about 18 to 63 on my Cortes meter. Depends on size of ring, weight. I find plenty of gold with the Cortes. No. 28 is the average ID number for ladies gold rings, some higher, some lower. There are plentty of rings that are just 2 - 3 inches deep.

Didnt see any body reply with this. I can air test my wifes wedding ring, gold, and it is usually 27 or 28 on my Deleon. BUT, the position of the ring can make alot of difference. If its on edge or turned birds eye view can make a big difference in what it TIDs. Even the distance away from the coil has an effect.
Here are some of the TIDs I get in the field.
Deleon:

95- Any coin with the exeption of the zinc 1982 to present cent.
44- A nickel
35-40 Pull Tab
upper 50s - 63 or so Pull Tab
These are in ground readings from my experience with a Deleon.
