Could use some help with ID

Looking for a little help identifying this piece and it's age. It was dug by a friend of mine on Friday. Measures 3 inches long by 2 inches high, pretty sure it's brass. Thanks for the help.

shoulder belt plate. not sure of age though, probably pre-civil war militia

I agree that it's a shoulder belt plate, but it is very similar to what we had on our high school band uniforms.
