This poor thing has truly been through a "war"!

But, if any of the experts can share a thought on what this used to be and what if anything I can do to straighten it out.
I would be very grateful.

I can try better pics but, there's just not much there to see.
Appears to be brass/bronze and even though looking very brittle, it is surprisingly hard to move.
I won't try until I get some input though.

I tried for slightly different lighting. There appears to be two tiny holes along the right most edge. Which would fold out to be
a squarish end.

Thanks in advance!

....Yup ! Something is perched there . Also directly below the perch, between the talons. fine piece of wire.
....to the left of the perch , below are a field of raised dots with possible flure de lis just above that , and below possible tail feathers.

Looks like half of a powder flask.

Thanks! It appears to be the same sort of eagle as the flask but the thing it's perched on appears to be sort of "turned up"? Like a handle of a gun only upside down? And, my impression is that this used to be a fairly flat piece. Maybe, attached by the 2 tiny holes? :dontknow:

Yes, it can be straightened. You may want to hire a pro. The short version is on Google, just look for annealing brass. Metal has to be heated until almost red with a torch, then quickly put in cold water. Then straighten it a LITTLE. Then repeat the entire process. With something as bent as yours is, would probably take 20 heatings and coolings to get it straight. I just unbent a silver butter knife I found, It did pretty good. Wasn't bent this badly though. Took 5 heatings/colling cycles. I also just dug a pre Civil War teaspoon which was bent like a pretzel. I took it to a large, well known jewelry store (they sell sterling flatware and bowls) and they sent it out to be straightened and cleaned. It will cost about $125 which is more than what the spoon is worth, but to me, I can handle that.

Just awesome.
Nice find my man....
The fact that it's not in perfect condition....it's solid history.

I have to agree with nhbenz, doesn't seem like it can be anythind else at this point. I thought maybe it was a brass emblem on the top of the bix in his link, but the description makes no mention of one, and seeing as that gun kit appears to be unused, unlikely it would be missing.

Here's another link for another one: https://new.liveauctioneers.com/item/7596400_1849-colt-pocket-eagle-brass-powder-flask

....Been all over looking for a case plaque or placard as you fellows.... Sure looks to have been flat in its prime. No luck yet.

Thanks guys! I'm pretty happy with what's been uncovered thus far!

I'm just having a bit of trouble understanding how that could be part of a round flask. Maybe it blew up?
Still, what's the two nail holes at the top? :dontknow:

The flask split at the seams and broke in two then was simply flattened out in the ground over the years.

Well, that puts the "nail" in it for me! I'm guessing, it blew up! :)
Didn't see those "nail holes".

My thanks to all the experts out there!!
