Got out to a new site and managed some nice finds this morning. Started off with a couple buttons and some small musket balls and a large cent. Got another low tone on the T2se thinking it was another musket ball and out pops this disc. Turns out to be a lead LC, but is facing the same, not reversed, and not pressed in, Strange! Continued to hit this site and managed some more lead and a total of 9 buttons. While rinsing off a larger piece of lead I bent it back into shape and indeed is a toy hatchet.

Nice finds! It looks like you have a few more LC's than just the one you believe is a Lead Counterfeit. It would be nice to see some pics of all of the coins after they have been cleaned up a bit. Are you sure that that LC is made from Lead? I ask because there were some Pattern Coins that were minted in a White Metal (not sure of the composition) that are very valuable. Once the date of the LC is known, some searching may turn up some information on Pattern coins for that year but then again, if it is in fact a Counterfeit but produced by a well known Counterfeiter, then it could be valuable as well.

very interesting about the lead large cent

Nice counterfeit, I found one last year in a cornfield and I believe it was made of pewter

I think there was something like a blacksmith at that site with the counterfeit and axe

Way to go on the counterfeit LC. :occasion14: That hatchet is way cool.
Congrats,

I would be so happy if my next large cent was counterfeit! Hopefully you can learn more about the one you have found. Thanks for posting.
