I actually found this button a few days ago. Wasn't going to post it, since it was grungy and the shank is broken off. But it cleaned up really nice tonight, so here it is.
Found this big guy in the woods and it was only 4 inches down. It's a huge 1 1/4" dandy button. Biggest button I have ever found. As you can see in the "before" pics, it was pretty grungy, even after my initial cleaning.
Fast forward to tonight. I was checking it out and some of the green crud started flaking off. So I started to rub it with a toothpick to get the rest off. Rubbed right off, but the button was mostly black underneath the crud. Not normal for the brass buttons I find. They're always green or reddish underneath the dirt.
Just had to get that black layer off, so I carefully scrubbed it with a Brillo pad. Sounds harsh, but I was gentle and used a lot of water. Got most of the black off and it turns out to be shiny tombac button! Only the second one I've ever found.
Sorry for the long story, but it was a thrill for me to actually improve the condition of a button for a change. I usually don't make them any better and a lot of the time, I make them worse.
