Greetings TNETers, Skypirate and I were allowed access to a wooded area that was once Farmland. It appears that farming may have stopped in the late 1800s, early 1900s and just logged about 60 years ago. In some areas you can still see the plow furrows. The first day we walked 3 1/2 miles to scout it out when we came to a hill top with a pit and mound between a large pine tree. So we stopped to hit the mound, and got immediate signals. We both had Tesoro U-Maxs and were hunting all metal. I dug into the mound and I believe it was the 3rd target I dug and came up as a loop of dirt. Low and behold, SkyPirate brushed it off while I was digging what I believe are mule shoes but some of you experts may have a better ID, SkyPirate said "look at this!" and we were surprised to have uncovered a stirrup. Later, looking it up here on TNET, I discovered it was a standard issue CSA Stirrup. We found other pieces; tack buckle and what we believe may be wagon parts. We also came across several carriage wheel rims. Most targets were either several inches to about 8 inches down.

I attached a picture of the pit, tree and mound as well as the finds that were discovered within a 50 foot radius of the site. Also is a cleaned pic of the Stirrup and document.

The second trip, we found more mule shoes and iron. SkyPirate later found a Cleaner bullet so we are wondering if the site may have been an unknown camp. We do know that the Union Army camped about 2 miles away. Other than the bullet, we found mostly iron, very little trash except from the bike trails.

On another note, I read a post about "The Shark Pit" last week, if anyone sees the Author, please pass on that I really enjoyed his post and the great things he would find. And yes, I remember the episode about the frolicking -mating crabs! If you see him, tell him I said Thanks!

Best digs to all, RonP

Thanks MaineRelic, The only non ferrous material was a flattened coffee pot cover. We were surprised of the lack of brass and not finding any coinage. But there is still a lot of area to cover. We were lucky to get access, a Northeastern accent doesn't open may doors here in the south. But thru my work connection, we are working on getting access to land where there was a Union Camp nearby. Best to you, RonP

Ron,
Looks like you and Joe are on to a hot spot there.
Congrats,
MM

do not forget to display the coins, when you find them.
Greetings!

I had a good time! I don't mind finding iron as long as I can identify what the piece was. Hope to find more bullets and other camp related items next time. :icon_pirat:

Thanks Guys. Just to let you know, the person who gave us access has a passion for histroy, so I'm donating all the iron (except the stirrup) to them. When I told them, they were thrilled. So everyone shares in the benifit of the hobby!

Good Digging

Joe,
A lot of times those rusty items turn out to be good. Some of my rusty relics from a Union camp include a Springfield lockplate and butt plate, two US trace chains, and a cannonball frag.
Good luck to you and Ron.

Thanks HISPAN, I also enjoy reading and viewing your post. Hope to see more soon, Ron

Ron,
Here are two on a property I detect. One well and one cellar hole. Lots of big iron by the cellar hole. See the resemblance to yours. ;D

Dug, I can see why you were surprised, very similar, but a good drive between our two sites! Next trip I'll climb down inside and scan the floor. I'll Keep you guys posted on what we find. Thanks, Ron

Ron,
Please do. I've been wanting to check out this cellar hole too, but am usually out there by myself.
You may want to do it before snake season. :tongue3:

I wonder if ours is some kind of cellar hole? It's right next to a big old Oak tree. You can actually see the roots of the Oak. Should we detect down in the hole? I tossed a lot of nails and other junk finds in there. :icon_pirat:
