Curious about beads.

I really would like to find a bead. I’m wondering if anyone knows anything about Indian beads in Maryland/Delaware area. What they look like and if there has been some found. Any info appreciated!

I’ve worked my butt off to find two plain white ones. Check out the fur trade section there’s a person there pulling them out of the ground by the thousands

I know we live in completely different areas and it's like comparing apples and oranges but I'm going to share anyway. I find two different types of beads bone and stone. The bone come from dry overhangs and most always made from bird bone.



The four middle pieces in this frame are bird bone beads. The longest has been scored but the beads not yet finished. Most are nice and polished on the ends when comple



Both strands of stone beads add up to a few over 800. They are a mix off all types of material including turquoise. I strung them together over time. Mostly found in ant hills within camps. Talk about having to train your eye....I also have a mother of pearl pendant but I will have to dig into some stuff to find it.

Some areas produce a lot of beads, and unfortunately in many areas the preservation doesn't really favor finding prehistoric beads...

Not sure specifically about your area, but in many river & coastal areas you have shell middens that can help preserve bone & shell. Shell middens are just old heaps and refuse piles of oyster and clam shells that people dumped their refuse on for generations.

Just for pictures, here are some of my bead finds from many years back from the Caribbean area. Some of the simple beads will look pretty similar anywhere in the world.

Here in the High Plains you can find beads on and around ant hills.

The last picture is from California and were mostly gifts and all the rest I have found in my area of southern Ohio and northern Kentucky along the Ohio River.

I am in Maryland, and as such you have to pretty much get onto a heavily used early contact period site to find a bead. The most common ones we find here are blue glass padre beads, but I've only found a few ever, and the brass tinkle cones.

You should have a ton of trade glass beads in the area around you. The Dutch brought ship loads to the North East Coast.
