Here's my favorite find so far. Found it in Darksville, WV in the undug part of a previous hole. I guess someone found something above it and didn't recheck their hole. Too bad for them.

That is great. One of these days I am gonna find one...d2

Great find,

Fossis..............

Welcome from the UK.

Great condition & familar story (happened to me a couple of times). :) Not with that type of buckle though. ::)

... was it deep? Maybe they just gave up and thought it was trash ;-) I have found two Civil War eagle plates in other people's holes!! In their defense, on of them was sideways and pretty deep.. didn't give the best signal.

Yeah, it was a little deep at 10 inches. The hole was odd in that it looked like someone had dug it with a posthole digger, narrow and cylindrical. There were lots of holes in this hundred acre plot though. They had cleared it for homes and until recently (I went by there during Christmas when I was on leave), there weren't any no trespassing signs so tons of detectorists were in and out of there every day. I was very fortunate to find that. I recheck most of the holes and covered holes I saw. What was even crazier is that a few days before, right near where most people parked, I found an 1819 large cent right between two holes and it was only 3 inches deep. Go figure.

very nice officer's sword plate---I found two of the same in Shenandoah Valley in the mid 90's.

Thanks for the comments everyone. I really can't decide if this is my ultimate favorite or the 1787 Connecticut copper I found at my parents house last year at 3 inches. I don't have a picture of that with me though. I'll have to wait and post it after I get back from Iraq. Thanks again.
