Bought a canteen at an antique shop, found under a table in a box for $4.00 with 20% off. Looked much like one i had seen on the web before. My question to the cw buffs, could this be the real thing. First pic is one from CampSite Artifacts web site that has one very close and listed as a rare confederate canteen. The screw on cap was pat: in 1854 so this could work.

Next is my find,it has some missing side bands. 71/2 x 2 3/8 . If not its at best water tight and I'm not out much. Thanks for the help and HH

Old, but I don't think old enough. I believe those are the style you would see with a wool cover so that when damp the evaporation would cool the water inside. I'm thinking 1890s to 1940's . . . but that's a guess. The screw top as opposed to cork or wood plug seems to be a post-war CW method.

I agree. I thought I'd find a pic but have not so far. I was thinking 1940s.

Thanks Charlie, if not CW period then I'm thinking post cw as well. The construction and solder joints are crude and makes me think it must be 19th century. After the war there were tons of canteens warehoused and were modified in many ways.

Could it be one like this one on ebay?

Hey Tony, did it give an age of the canteen? Looking at the construction of mine compaired to the top pic that sold on a relic site as a confederate canteen it keeps me hoping. The spout and sling bands and soldered seams looks so much alike. Again my thoughts are based on hope not Knowledge.

i found this one on a site and to me it looks pretty close and if it is it said around 1850-1870:Both sides flat, with three soldered sling loops, typical of Early Militia or Confederate Canteens
