Today I finally had a day off to take my Garrett GTI 1500 for a spin. I had a pretty decent day, as I had 2 "firsts" happen! The day started off at an old fishing hole where I used to go fishing when I was a kid and my second dig scored my very first Indian Head penny! It was a pretty nice 1903 at about 7". Since this was only my second dig at this location I had high hopes, but to my dismay, I didnt find much more there (a few modern clad and typical junk). I bounced around from location to location for a few more hours with nothing exceptional to report. So as the day waned I decided to go hit a local park where I scored pretty good in the past. Well, after about a half hour and a bunch of clad later I finally dug my very first pre 1964 Quarter. It was a 1955 in great shape at about 6"! The 1954 D Wheat penny was in the same hole! About 10 mins later I found a rifle brass and have no idea what kind of rifle it was that fired this round. Then the rain came and ruined my fun. But all in all I was satisfied with the fruits of my labor today. Can anyone identify the brass and time period? I have never heard of a 38-56... HH Bryan H.

An IH, a silver and a wheat, sounds like a decent day to me. Keep on swingin man! :headbang:

Winchester manufactured 160,000 Model 1886 guns fron 1886 - 1935. Of that total, 18,483 were made in 38-56 W.C.F. (which is not the same as the 38-55).

Of all the various cartridge chamberings offered in the Model 1886, the 38-56 W.C.F. is the most anemic, and is therefore the least desirable to collectors and shooters.

Great find though. For more info, google 38-56 calibeer history. Congrats!!
