I dig this today at a late 1700's - early 1800's property today. At first I thought I had a Colonial shoe buckle, but if this piece were straightened back out it would not form a rectangle. As you can see it is very decorative and has tiny holes around one of the edges. It's made of copper and I'm dying to try to straighten it back out, but don't want to snap it in half.
Any ideas what this is? :dontknow:
Age? :icon_scratch:

Thanks,
MM

Re: Colonial? Victorian? Decorative copper piece.

Colonial license plate frame...lol

Not sure MM. Looks like it could be a part of a decorative plate holder or picture frame... :icon_scratch:

I think you have one half of a purse frame? Just a guess though. HH :icon_thumright:

My guess too - the holes would be either for metal rings or for crochet string to go through?

It looks like a purse frame. Look in your closet and compare it to some of your purses and see if they match. If you think it is pre 1800 I will get Quindy to compare it to some of his old purses.

I concur that this item is likely half of the top frame for a ladies mesh purse. The mesh style purses were very popular in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The manufacturing process apparent in the details of this stamped brass relic, lends to a later period than evidenced in Colonial period items.

Thanks for the info CC.
You are dead on. Most of the things I've been finding around these oaks has been late 1800's.
