Friday our area was hit with a rain and snow. The forecast for Saturday was more of the same, extreme cold and rain showers all day. As the coordinator I was expecting the outing to be a bust and That I was going to be all alone for this trip. To my surprise, 12 other die hard DGD members showed up at the meeting location. The sun was out and the temps were not as cold as predicted. The day was beginning to look up.

Once we got to the claim access road and started heading in, three large Cedars had fallen blocking the road. We weighed our options and decided we would try to clear a path around the trees. That still meant we had to somehow move two prices of trees. One member had a chainsaw and another had an axe. While we were waiting for the chainsaw, a few of us took turns on the axe. We eventually got the chainsaw fired up but when we went to make the cut, the bar seized up. Back to the axe. The team picked up the 20’ section and moved it out of the way. On to the next log. We took turns again on the axe. After getting a third of the way through, we wrapped a chain around one end and yanked it out with a truck. We used our digging bars to move it the rest of the way out of our path.

Looks like you all had a great day with lots of exercise ---- but come on man show us some gold :dontknow:.
Hope to join you sometime

Now that is good to see, folks that will stick with a plan and improvise to see it happen. Improvise in this case is taking on downed trees with limited "working" equipment. The trees have stopped me many times though I just can't quite see myself purchasing a chain saw, maybe someday! Great pictures in the water, I had to smile at the fellow sitting in the blue chair in the stream, nothing like being comfortable while prospecting for gold. Thank you for sharing and continue having great adventures! Looks like this next week will continue to see snow falling in the Sierras................63bkpkr

Down trees has stopped you many times, but you can’t see yourself buying a chainsaw?
I don’t get it. Isn’t that a long way to drive just to have to turn around? Used saws can be had cheap. I bet if you got trapped behind a down tree, you would be wanting a saw pretty bad?

Well, I would love to show you some of the gold but most of the miners are seasoned and take their cons home to process. Funny thing, as I was unpacking my equipment, I found 3 buckets that had concentrates in the bottom. One of them was from three weeks ago at this very location. I will see if anyone posted pictures and try to post them here later.

We are currently in the process of rebuilding a trailer to take to our outings. We now realize we need to add a chainsaw, a handsaw, and an axe to the inventory for situations just like this.

Hi IMAUDIGGER, do not get me wrong "I Love Chainsaws", I've used them quite a bit to furnish wood for the small 'cabin' I lived in once and they are the tool to use when wood needs to be cut.

Basically cutting the trees down where I'm currently interested in going is more effort and danger than it takes to walk around them. They've been there for several years and no other person has been interested in cutting them up even though they are Oak and would make great firewood or furniture. The other times when trees have been down I have done some cutting with a hand saw to just get by and with other downed trees that completely blocked the road I just went to a different trail. Were I to live in the mountains I would most certainly have a chainsaw in the vehicle at all times. Oh, and if I turned around to use another trail I did not need to go far. I do not let trees stop me from going camping/prospecting/fishing/enjoying it 'out there'..............63bkpkr

There is no shortage of adventures out there.
I have had to turn around before and always regretted not bringing a saw.
There has been only one time that I had a large tree fall and block my way down the mountain.
Luckily I was wood cutting and had a saw. Otherwise it would have meant a 20 mile hike.

you know i have wondered many times how much gold is in that pool of mercury sitting at the bottom of old river. then a striper slammed my rod, and just like that, i lost that thought.

till I spent 20 days at the claim i never relised why everyone I saw carryed a chainsaw. one day after very small storm found a pine had come down acrost road into town luckly shattered into three pieces so could pull top two off road other wise it would have been back to camp for the saw. crazy thing was it was a tiny mild nothing storm. but in just one spot must of had a microburst wind.

Getting things done Delta Gold Digger style. I was expecting maybe six for the tree removal project but ended up with more than 10 volunteers and just as many chainsaws. Wiped out this trees in about an hour. Enjoy the pics.
