I got a call today to help out on a roman site near my home. Stopped work early and went with a buddy to detect for the archies. This site was started by the archies last year and after harvest they came with bigger equipment to locate the main building. We detected the plane where the top soil was removed. In the next step they go 8-10" deeper to see where the posts once stood. Mainly we were called to find remains of urn burials. In about one hour we had some bits and pieces and two graves. The first, dug by my buddy had a big 1th century fibula and the second one i found had a fragment of a bracelet or edging of a pot. Both have deeper signals too.
After the archie looked at the finds he decided to start excavating tomorrow and we were invited to help with that too. He was very pleased with our work, because this layer of soil would be removed without further investigation and the graves were lost forever.

Her are some pics from the site and the finds. Last pics show finds from the surrounding field. The other finds go to the museum of course!

You're right with the brooch. :occasion14: It's called "Zwiebelkopffibel" (Onionhead Fibula) here. Very nice piece with perfect patina. Too bad that it's broken, but normal in that constellation.

Nice brooch/fibula! The second picture, is that a grave with the measuring stick? It is so much nicer working with the Archies than working against them. HH and let us know if you find anything else, Mike

I have given up work a few times & will do again if asked to help out the Archies. Always a positive experience.:occasion14:

Glad to hear that Archies in some places will work with us instead of pretending we are all looters.

Great work Lu and good JU JU headed your way over this. Another hit at one of the banner finds? Good luck.

Hi Mike! Not sure on the discoloration. Definite not a grave, as we have only urn burials there. More likely some kind of dump, but no metal in there. In the moment no more finds, but i'll keep you updated. More soil will be removed there. We detected there yesterday, mostly trash from burning rubbish at the adjoining farm and dumping in the field.

Yes, much fun to work with open minded people!

Thanks H and Jason! These Archies are a private business, hired by the city. They have our numbers and call when they need help. This is a housing estate and has to be archaeologic developed before any houses can be build. Private archaeolgists are much more open to detecting than the government payed ones....
