Detecting near highway historical markers?????

It varies from site to site, Scott. If it is on the national register of historic places then, yes, it would be technically illegal to detect, so says the Feds. But... many of those places are not on that register and have not been protected by state designation either.

The biggest thing in your favor is both a negative and a positive... the negative is that often those markers are set MILES from the site of the building or event they commerate. So it may take a lot more work than you might imagine to actually find the site. But... and this is the positive.... when you do, it is so far on private land or other wise not easily accessible land due to thick woods with no roads, etc. that you can get access to the site and may discover that it has never been touched with a detector before.
