So, in 1986, this then 13 year old decided I would bury a time capsule. I put a bunch of love letters, pictures, and a home run baseball in about 10 plastic bags inside an old army ammo can. Thinking I would bury it 5 ft deep, I think I probably made it a foot.

I would like to find it before my parents sell the farm.

I think it is in a roughly .25 acre area but if I remember correctly, I also drank a few snorts of my dad's apple schnapps the same day.

This is buried near a 100 year old rubbish pile, so I need a detector that can ideally pinpoint a metal ammo can.

I thought about buying a used unit on eBay and then selling it back. Not that money is an issue, I just don't want to buy a new $1000 unit and take a bath on it.

Any advice?

If you only buried it a foot most detectors will find it with out an issue. Covering an area that big I would recommend a detector with a larger coil, 10-15 inch would be ideal.

We have a section here that members sell their used detectors, you might check out our "Classifieds" forum.

Another possibility is to post what state/area you are in and find someone to help you out. I'm sure someone would be interested in helping for the opportunity to dig some other targets there (if that works for you).

I would think a Detector they use for finding property stakes would be best as you want to find a magnetic can only

U can probably go on facebook groups, find someone in your area metal detector group who will come find it. I found one for a friend a few years back. He could have found it with a probe. We walked out and he put me right on top of it. Not much of a hunt lol.
