this just happend to be in a hole of a target i was digging.... what is weird is that i have never found any wood tools before while digging....it must be white oak to have held up as good as it is... i think it was to hold a insulator on a pole but not positive... it looks like threads where insulator goes but other end had a iron something around it... theres a tiny bit of metal still left on it...and u can see were it was tapered ... any ideas... oh ,, its 9 '' long.. thanks!!!!

Sure looks like an insulator tine off a crossbeam on a pole. Thread marks and all.

its a butt whipper! You know spare the rod spoil the child. The way things are now a days I half expect to go to a museum one day and see a nice paddle on display explaining the old days when it was actually legal to spank a kid.

Really no idea what that piece of wood is but its an interesting find.

You should check out our current quandry in NZ regarding the Anti-Smacking Bill.
Otherwise, could it be a musical instrument?

My Grandma had a laundry spoon. About 3 ft long. Take you right off your feet. She also had an umbrella stand by the front door with willow switches. She lived on the other end of our street and every kid in the neighborhood feared her.

Remember when you did something bad at school and the classroom teacher sent you to the gym teacher for a "boxing lesson"? Then, when you came home bruised you got paddled for the original act in the classroom all over again. Today you'd own the school and township.

I know this sounds like a joke, or an attempt at a pun because you found it with your MD, but could it be ironwood? The following quote is taken from:
http://www.desertmuseum.org/programs/ifnm_ironwoodtree.htm

"It is remarkably resistant to rotting, perhaps because its heartwood is rich in toxic chemicals that make it essentially non-biodegradable (Dimmitt 2000a). Ironwood trunks can persist for up to 1600 years"

i think it was to hold a insulator on a pole but not positive... it looks like threads where insulator goes but other end had a iron something around it... theres a tiny bit of metal still left on it...and u can see were it was tapered ... any ideas... oh ,, its 9 '' long.. thanks!!!!

The wooden wedge shape doesn't do a thing for me and I was brought up in central Canada, around people who installed and serviced power poles and telephone poles. Maybe its more of a central and western states thing. If it were really ironwood, that would make sense since it only grows in the Sonoran desert.

Just a thought.

It's a wooden insulator pin. The insulator that would have been on it would be worth more than it, but some people who collect insulators also like to have some pins for displaying purposes. You might want to look around that area and see if you can find some insulators - the wire that was wrapped on them might give your MD a target.
