Deuces are Wild !
They say that Bad things happen in threes… and that sometimes good things come in pairs. I for one certainly believe that good things come in pairs. Two feet, two legs, two .. uh.. arms and hands and eyes.
Well? Did you actually think I was going to name some of my other favorite “pairs”..? <laughing> It’s always nice to find anything, but sometimes it’s even nicer when you find pairs of things. Duality! Yin and Yang. Night and Day. Okay okay okay.. I’m going off on a tangent again. Sorry. Anyway, Today I found a LOT of pairs whilst metal detecting. Enough so that I had to include that theme into this post about my excursions of avarice. (metal detecting ).
Today dawned wet and cold again. The same as it has for the past three days here in the heart of the BlueGrass State of Kentucky. I am still on vacation however so the weather, while not endearing, was not a big deal as compared to say a regular day off. I say I’m on vacation, but I’ve actually been working most of the week, for my father. My father has his own Butcher Shop, been in operation for many many years now. Every year, about this time, he gets very busy at the old meat shop and needs the help of all of his offspring.. being his children, and grandchildren now. You see, it’s Deer Season. I mean, deer hunting season that is, modern firearms to be precise. And during deer season, my father stops all other processing, other than a small retail trade, and processes deer exclusively. The deer hunters harvest their game and bring it to my dad’s shop to be processed. (ie. Cut up, wrapped and frozen.. and in some cases even skinned before the other can be done as well.) So, This time every year, when I’m able, I take a vacation from my job and go down to the farm and help out at my dad’s shop. As I’ve said, I’ve been working there most of this week, but today I had a Dentist appointment scheduled so I was not helping cut up all the bambies. Instead, I had my six month check up and cleaning. Well, part of this morning anyway. After my appointment was over, I took advantage of the changing weather to get in a little swing time. The rain had ceased early in the morning and the ground was drying up. Oh it was still overcast and windy, and a bit chilly as well, but that’s not so big a deal to one of us Metal Detectorist Types now is it? Of course it always helps if you are finding stuff too. And I did. Lots of stuff! Pairs of things.
And so it began. I hadn’t walked (swung) three steps from my truck at the park I was detecting when I started getting signals. First Target(s) were a couple of memorial cents. A couple yards later, two dimes within three inches of one another. Two pull tabs, two bottle caps, two quarters!, Two turtle doves, and a partridge in a pear treeeeee.. OH DAMNIT! That Song is stuck in my head! The Radio stations are already playing Christmas music again. <grin> Unfortunately I found no gold rings, or anything of incredible value at all, just lots of coins. LOTS OF COINS! Some in pairs, as mentioned, but mostly one at a time. But it was the pairs that ruled the day.
Now, by “pair” I don’t mean identical items, though in some cases, like the coins, it does. No, I mean pairs as in similar items, found separately. Like..

… and…

…and…

…and…

…and…

I found a total of 6 different batteries today, scattered about the soccer fields of the park I was detecting in. I guess you could call that three pair. That Pen or penlight half seen in the picture was one of the single items found today although, it has batteries in it. I suspect it was a penlight or a laser pointer before it was broken or lost. More single items might include this dude I found mowing the lawn. He does have a BIG PAIR of his own as you might tell from this picture..

… a pair of “blades” that is. I have no idea who he’s supposed to be representing, some comic book character perhaps? <shrug> I guess you’d have to have read comic books to recognize him. Yeah.. that’d be the key. Key? Oh yeah.. I found a couple of keys today too.

Okay.. so technically that was a pair and a half with the keys. So sue me. <grin> An unusual find today was this bad boy.

I think it’s safe to say that most of you reading this have found lighters at one time or another while detecting. Usually it’s the disposable variety, or occasionally an older Zippo or “classic” “keeper” lighter. But how many of you have found one of these decorative desk top fire decanters? Too bad it’s too far gone to work anymore. Still though, it was a cool find. As was this Soccer Medallion that I found today. I *did* mention I was detecting at a park with soccer fields didn’t I? <grin> Big surprise to find this then huh?

And as with many of the other soccer fields I’ve detected in the past I found a “flipper” coin today as well. Well, Ok, it’s not exactly a toss coin, but rather a large coin that was probably used as just that, to toss at the beginning of the game, etc. etc.

It’s always nice to find those big coins. What a blast! Of course, there were the usual suspects to be found today as well. We all know them and love them.. or is it “loathe” them? You know, can slaw, bottle caps, rivets, and pull tabs.

… And then there were the coins. The Clad! The Battery and gas and snack money. The Vacation Fund! This park has been rather productive before, recently as a matter of fact, like LAST WEEK even. And it was productive today as well. It’s a small park as most parks go in my town, but it’s got wide open space for several soccer fields and it’s been used a lot apparently for league play over the past few years. And it shows! Check out my clad total for the day…

SWEET! Nearly fifteen dollars in under three and a half hours today. Thank GOD for Knee Pads! That’s roughly thirty bucks in coins pulled out of this little park in two trips here over the last week and a half, and I’m not finished with the soccer fields yet. I’ve still got two more small fry fields to detect and then perhaps around the tennis courts. <grin> Too bad vacation ends before I can get back out there to this park. Maybe the day after Thanks Giving? Yeah.. Right! Black Friday!? I think my wife might take exception to that. *sigh* Oh well. I can be thankful for the time I got to spend detecting this week and last, and the finds I made doing so. I hope you all can find something to be Thankful for this coming weekend and ESPECIALLY NEXT WEEK.. ahem.. for Thanks Giving Day. And.. as always..
