Why would a person notch out them in the first place.

Because they are designated a nuisance target.
Or maybe some think since silver reads higher detector can be set to notch the Zincoln and find the silver.
Or someone is lazy and don’t want to necessarily dig Zincolns.
Or they think accepting Zincolns while detecting is for kiddies.
Or a friend of a detectorists does as such so they do too. Remember one can still locate silver and even copper coins doing. So user could be lured into thinking what they are doing yet finds silver and even copper coins is doing just fine.

Think that about covers it.

That's the trouble with signals and notching things. You never know if it's "bs or not" until you dig it. I'd rather dig a zincoln than miss a masked IHP or something.

I don't physically notch them, but will generally mentally ignore them, especially shallow ones, if I'm in an area that is more likely to have those than IHPs. Indian Head cents are always nice to dig, but not all that big a deal to me anymore.

I know that I'd be the last person to ever knock out a 85.
Some targets get dragged down a tad being in the iron/placement in the soils.

.925 silver comes in the same TID as zinc penny on the D2 in park and general programs (not sure about other programs). Some people coming from D1 might notch them out when hunting a sports field or maybe a freshwater beach. The older single freq. D1 set at 18khz would put a TID on .925 silver at 88 or above depending on size and mass and TID on zinc at 82-85 depending on corrosion. The D2 puts .925 right at 85-86. I don't notch zinc pennies, but I started digging every shallow target in a sports field this spring when I stumbled on this phenomenon. I tried to inform others in another forum but only got advice on detecting. A couple .925 finds in that sports field that ID'd at 85 with the D2.

I will say that as a person who hunts playgrounds I have dug thousands of stinkin lincolns, and depending on the location, might skip signals that I believe are the Zinc pennies... in a playground just because I'm tired of digging them, but because they corrode the way they do, I've had them read from a nickel all the way to a modern penny and you can't really tell what it is unless you dig them... True story... Years ago I was hunting with my partner and he got a zinc penny signal in the middle of a baseball field, he tried to get it with a screwdriver (my methode of picking targets) but could not hit it... I think it was like a 65 on the DFX. He finally gave up and walked away... but I said .. I'm going to dig it because I'm not getting many signals.... and I went of to dig "just because" ...
It turned out to be the BIGGEST Gold Class Ring I've ever dug... and he has never forgiven me for not giving it to him, because.... heck he found it first... but I didn't ... its still in my collection.. 🤣
