Here's an iron relic that I found today at an old plantation site in Louisiana. It looks to me like a tomahawk based on pictures I've seen on the internet but I have not idea. Any help? I'm sure someone on this site would know for certain.
Thanks for any assistance.

Thanks. I mainly look for civil war stuff and ended up hunting a circa. 1795 plantation site today. I figured someone on this site would be more familiar with metal tomahawks used in earlier time periods. Is this a common find for fur trader relic hunters?

Given the history of the property I would say polled hawk but it could also be a shingle axe. Once cleaned up you may be able to find a makers mark.

A hammer poll tomahawk is what it looks like.

Is the poll circular or does it appear to have facets as in an octagon shape?

So small, though! Would this have been used as a tool, or as a weapon?

Everything you want to know provided here...
Small and light so it could be carried on your person. Imagine carrying something heavier for weeks on end. The hammer end was probably almost as useful as the business end.

HAMMER POLL TOMAHAWKS

I'd say it deserves to be preserved with a new handle.
Imagine a mountain man cutting saplings then driving them in to secure a trap.
Maybe even shaving with it...

Awesome find that's great

Looks to me to be a stone masons tool. Nice find.

That’s a good idea. I think I will put a new handle on it and display it.
Thanks for the information on the poll ax.
