Different size searchcoils?

I am a new detectorist and have been reading and researching all I can find about the subject. What is the advantages of using different size coils? When searching along the edge of concrete pads such as tennis courts, I find the rebars in the concrete interfere with my search...would a smaller coil be helpful? I am now using a 10" coil. jimmileo

a "HOCKEY PUCK" ( 4" ) would probable work alot better. less depth. & narower search field.

The 10" coil is too big to be effective at the tight spots. Try a smaller coil and reduce your sensitivity. I've worked several nearby tennis courts with my 8" coil effectively and got within inches of the iron border plate around the pad to make recoveries. I will swing into the area where the iron will affect my machine but listen for anything outside the normal beep from the nearby metal. Using a machine with a pinpoint function and raising the coil several inches can help if you think you've got a target near the iron. Just listen as you come near the iron for a smaller change in tone that indicates a target.

I got a 4 inch coil for my BH 505 and it has helped a lot in my yard and other high trash areas. Now instead of a 12 inch hole I did three 3 inch holes.
