I have a lot of luck around old trees. I found two mercury dimes last month around this tree, and yesterday I found a Buffalo Nickel around the roots of the same tree. What I do is swing almost parallel to the trunk in order to get as close as possible. I also use my smaller 6" coil around the roots. Yesterday, as what usually happens, I will find a coin between the fork in the roots. Seems to happen a lot. I will get my smaller coil as close as possible and then take my Lesche digger and sometimes a probe to pick between. When you know it is a coin down there, you have to be extremely careful and work slow in order not to scratch the coin, due to a lack of digging room. I also seem to have better luck at burrowing under roots rather then cut roots. Seems like roots pull up coins from below.

I've had some pretty good luck around old trees. It seems like everyone hunts the inner grass areas of the tree but leave the outside neglected for whatever reason. If it's a large old tree look at how far out the branches extend and also at where the flattest areas are. Start at the base and work your way around the tree in a circular motion until you've reached out a few feet past the farthest branches. Hope that helps and good luck.

I always find old coins around old trees, the down side is trying to get them out of the roots, i can rember one time I got a SLQ deep in tree roots when I did get to it I couldn't get it out I could see it, so i broke a branch off the tree and used two sticks to pull it out, but ended up being dateless anyway..

It's not a matter of how far from the tree. It's where the find winds up after all the years.

Remember though, that tree wasn't always as big around as it is now. I found my one and only TRIME right up against a tree trunk. Probably lost
early on and kept getting pushed out by the tree's growth.

Simply start close & work your way out. Finds are where they are lost, no real formula.
