dime? I think not

This little gem rang up as a dime, although it got that wrong it was right about it being silver and the depth which was approx. 4". Is there anyway to tell the age of this. There is a makers mark but i cant make it out.

ok, I'll retract that and say that it "indicated that it was a dime which is in the, possible silver area" of my MD.

both clad and silver dimes ring up in the "dime" area on most machines with a coin ID section type display

That is true and i have to say that for the most part, if it is showing that it's a dime and not bouncing around, it's usually a dime. Same goes for the penny and quarter marks. Can't say as to the half dollar and dollar on account i have never found either of those, sadly.

both silver dimes--plus clad dimes and older pre 1982 solid copper cents tend to ring up as dimes ( high tone) --due to the fact the copper core on clad dimes and copper cents tend to ring up similar

nice ring! It reads DIME because the basic diameter is that of a dime!

Thank you, Ocean. I have learned that, since it did the same thing with two more rings that i have found recently.

It's based on conductivity, alloy, and size of target. That's why a wad of foil, a nickel, and a gold band sound virtually the same. A large gold ring can I.D. in the cent range. Aluminum can ring at the highest number if it's a can, and down low if it's corroded slaw.

That was one of the hardest things i had to get used to cuda. Being so new to the hobby, i just assumed, if it said dollar coin, it was a dollar coin but nope, more like a smashed pepsi can. Thanks for looking guys

Yup, any machine that has an icon pop up when you go over a target, is just a "best guess" that the computer is making. After you get some more experience in the field, you'll be able to better determine what is underground based on size, depth, audio, and display reading. None of it is chiseled in stone or fool proof. Let the machine guess, then based on your senses, make your best guess. After a 100 hours or so, your guesses will be more accurate than the machine's.
