Looks like a heavy duty trivet.
Also possibly a heat diffuser for a wood cook stove. It would hold a pan off of the direct heat, for simmering. These are wild guesses. Best wishes for finding the right answer.

Very interesting item. Where was it found? Is it more thick at one end than the other? I feel like I have seen something like this before, but can't find the file in my brain.

Looks like a celtic knot.
That's what my phone been saying when i used google picture search. There is clearly an attempt to make a snake head that doesnt make it infinite as other celtic knots i see. The fact that the head of the serpent doesn't go back into the infinite pattern is not helping things. LOL thanks for your feedback

Do ya know any of its history? it's interesting, and I see the knot as infinite with the head as a sort of appendage off the body. Does that make sense? I don't think it's a simple trivet being carved on all sides.

That’s an excellent point. You’d think the bottom would not need to be a show surface.

Could it just be a decorative piece? I know military personnel often brought home teak statuettes, carvings, etc from their travels. Often village craftsmen turned out such items just for souvenirs. Maybe it was an eye catcher that sold well.
