Draped bust and capped bust?!?

What is the difference and why are they called draped or capped? Is it the particular design or image? Where or how do they derive draped and capped and also bust? Just curiosity from a new MDer

Draped Bust Cent was produced between 1796-1807. So-named because the bust of Lady Liberty is draped.

Draped Bust Half Cents made between 1800-1808.

Draped Bust Half Dime were made from 1796-1805.

Draped Bust Dimes were made from 1796-1807.

Draped Bust Quarters were made from 1796-1807.

Draped Bust Half Dollars were made from 1796-1807.

Draped Bust Dollars were made from 1794-1804.

Similarly Capped Bust coins were made in many denominations about the same time.

Differences include whether the bust is pointed left or right, and variations on the reverse design of the coins.

Going to PCGS.com will provide you with examples of each, by clicking on the numbers shown on the left-hand columns. Or, you can simply search on google images for Draped Bust or Capped Bust coin.

Additionally, almost any good quality coin book will show you examples.

The Draped Bust has a gown draped over the bust's shoulders, and she faces right, with uncovered hair.

The Capped Draped Bust has the same drapery but with a Phrygian cap on her head and she faces left.
