For those of you who dont recall i hit up this field in Sept-Oct.of last year and it produced 7 days of Large cents. In all i have dug over 14 Large coppers. However things have been pretty dry there for about 2 months now.
I went down there today, and decided to dig many signals i normally dont dig. this is because last year i dug a nice iron lock in the same field. I was there for about an hour, and hit a weird siginal that went from quarter/ dime to fluxuating iron. then solid iron/ nickle area. i then decided to give it a try and out pops the plug. I check the plug and sure enough i have a garbage hit from the plug. Before i removed the garbage from the plug i checked the hole. Suddenly there is a nice load bang on the detector. I look down and there is a nice CT copper. In the right light the features are real nice. Judging by the style i believe it is a 1788 mailed head facing right. Over the course of the past 4 months im sure either myself, or others have passed that target and disreguarded it b/c of the nail that ended up being right above the old copper.
Thanks for looking

Nice find! I betcha that copper would clean up a bit more with a little (careful) elbow grease.

it prob. would. However, through my experience, the more you mess with them the worse they get. Ive dug over 20 Large coppers in a year, and ive tried everything from electrlisis, to olive oil. I found the best cleaning method is alittle soft clothe, and just buff out the area until all the surface dirt is off. From what ive found its the only way the coin doesnt turn dark.

You've got to love those coppas. That field reminds me of a site that PACO, Colonial KirkPA, and I hit that yielded 16 Coronet cents, 1 Draped Bust cent, 1 King George III coppa, an 1835 Capped Bust half dime, and over 60 buttons.

Keep hitting that site until it is "Bone Dry."

Nice Connecticut Copper. The CONNEC is very clear and it looks to have good detail. I agree that it might clean up a little better but i know what you mean about making a coin worse. Sometimes thats the risk you take when you clean it. I have had cleaners remorse before. Hit that filed some more. Theres gotta be more there.

You guys are very fortunate on the East coast! All of those colonial sites and civil war relics make me want pull up stakes and move the family East to do some serious detecting. Keep the pictures and reports coming . . . . it keeps us on the West coast inspired. :)
