I live in North Georgia near the Etowah River and while hiking on corp property I have come across several dry stream beds that lead from the top of the mountain down to the Etowah, being rather new to the hobby of gold mining I am curious to know if anyone has any experiences they can share with me about treasure hunting in this area. I have taken several samples and have found some black sand about a foot deep, but other than Georgia clay have found no gravel. Should I bother to dig deeper into the soil? Being in the gold belt, I feel there might be some gold there.

I would take a sample of the black sand and put it in a plastic gold pan and then run a powerful magnet across the underside of the pan. It should draw the sand away and if there is any gold it will be left in the bottom of the pan.

thanks for the tip...

Don't give up on your first try, but scout the area, take multiple samples, there could be some real fine gold as well, so try to shake n settle it first....

should i be concerned that I have dug a hole about 2-3 feet deep and still have only red clay?
