I was detecting the Colonial homestead this morning/afternoon and wasn't getting much luck, just some clad. Then I hit an Indian but not in very good shape. Could barely read the 18_ _. A few minutes later I get a very small signal, but a good one and I'm thinking it's some kind of nothing because it's too small to be a coin, just one pass of the detector and then it's gone. I get whatever it is out of the hole and in the small dirt pile, it was very shallow. I pull it out and it's tiny, maybe 3/4 the size of a dime and almost paper thin (I thought it was a hammered coin), but I clearly see the big "C" on it with III inside the "C" -- sweeet! My first 3 Center. The back is almost completely rubbed away, I can almost see the whole word "United" along the edge but that's about it, aside from being able to see the outline of the star. It seems to have been worn away along all the edges and on the back, but the front is pretty clear. However, it won't photograph well with my crappy camera. I will have Earthworks do it this week and will post it. His always come out well. Crackhead report for today -- three crackheads were at the site. Did not have any problems with them.

that's great dude,, worn schmorn i say,, it's all yours !! ;D ;D

thats awesome man! a three center is on my list of things i want to find. is it a silver or a nickel?

Thanks. It's the one made with silver and copper, because the one with nickle has a wreath around the III and not the "C"

Congrats Bergie, a first is a first is a first!! Something I can only dream about finding here in Oregon --- crackheads we got, colonial sites we're a bit short on...... ;D

Dude! Sweet find. I love three cent coins. Please post a picture.

Great job! Never find one of those again. Man thats cool!
Heres one to compare.

This tiny silver coin is also known as a "Trime" or a "Fish-scale". The odd denomination is tied to the Postal rates at the time, which were also the justification for the Gold Three-Dollar Coin. Beginning in 1865, this type overlapped with the Nickel Three Cent Coins and the production of the Trimes decreased gradually until the type was ended in 1873.
