Metal Detecting
Since I've been detecting, over the past year and a half, I've found a number of 18th century and even two 17th century European coins, but my oldest American coin was a large cent from the 1820's.

Yesterday, I found this one. I over-cleaned it (live and learn). I swear there was a point where I could make out the "7" and "8" in "1798," but anyway it's at least 1807.

Thanks for looking.

Congrats on the old copper! :occasion14:

sweet. you sure can't find anything like that where I live

Nice! Better condition than they usually come out. I've found quite a few but they're always faded to almost nothing n no date. I don't clean them much. If they don't toothpick nicely I chuck them in the bucket with all the toasty goodies.

That’s a nice largie congrats

That one looks real nice to me. I have found two of those myself, neither one as sharp as yours. Congrats on a great coin find.

Congrats on the copper, something one would never get tired of digging.

Congrats on your oldest coin to date. That is a nice LC.

Congrats on the LC! She is a beauty:occasion14:

Thanks! I'm like you. I don't clean coins much. Maybe toothpick or toothbrush. But, I was obsessed with somehow magically making the date appear on this one, so I used heated peroxide and waxed it. It did reveal more detail in places, but it also revealed some fine pits. I'll take it though! I love coins and relics from this period.

Congrats on finding your oldest coin - it's always great when you break your own records !

Congrats on your 1807 LC buddy! :notworthy:

Don't lose any sleep regarding over cleaning your coin, we've all done it.
It is what it is due to the soil conditions you found it in, some coins just clean up better then others.

Beautiful DBLC- Congrats!

Wow! Congrats on digging your oldest coin to date. Great save for your collection. The bar is set wayyyy up there now. GL out there.

That is one great looking coin. I struggle with the over cleaning issue too. Now, when I'm lucky enough to find a LC, my motto is " Less is more". Congratulations on finding your oldest US!

Congrats on that coin! I've found a few draped busts and none that are that good! You still have quite a bit of detail left on there so don't regret the cleaning too much. I'm happy with how your coin turned out! :icon_thumleft:

Thanks for the encouragement, everyone!

This is one of my favorite coin finds, because it's early U.S. and because I really like the design, but I should clarify, my oldest coin is something a little different. It was one of my first posts on tnet, a Pope Clement IX 1/2 Baiocco 1667 - 1669 from the Papal States. It was also one of the most unexpected things I've found.

I’ve also found a few of those, in about the same condition. I just let mine dry out now and lightly tooth pick them. I only got a date off one, 1803
