Primary Interest:
Metal Detecting
with Chanel 1 some iron can be picked, with 11 no or very little. :hello:

does anyone know what effects the different channels have on detection, or is it all conjecture, guesses, and hunches? why cant we get a description from people at minelab who actually designed and built the etrac. please, no offense is meant towards any poster. its frustrating to me to see anything other than cold hard facts on a peice of electronics equipment. take a watch, a cell phone, a fishfinder....etc....you would never see this type of discussions on anything but metal detectors and it seems like manufacturers must like it that way. frustrating!

Hi stasys I should of said that I hunt in coin and Jewelry program and channel 3 , 7 and 11 seem to be the best for my hunts.
I am courious about the relic hunters which channels produce for them.
I know there are other factors involved like soil / lenght of hunt / if there is anything to be found on the site /some kind or emf / or how hungry we are for lunch (LoL).

My favourite:

1/ Switch on Garrett propointer and place on ground.
2/ Place detector to one side of it and 12" above.
3/ Initiate "noise cancel".
4/ Wait for it to decide it's finished channel setting, whatever it may be.
5/ Pick up pinpointer...and detect!

Works for me. ;D

Hello extractor, personally hunt only in TTF without discrimination gain 10, in some situation Audio Smooth-if place in iron and with something interesting, but I use Explorer which is basicaly the same like Etrac. different channel use depends from coils too- a bit,but my precise air test show deeper I can get with channel 1, but its very very little. my sugestion dont much concentrate on channels more on very simple things like keeping coil lower an etc. :hello:

I normally let my detector choose the frequency, just run noise cancel. I do like Dano,s suggestion and may use it. Sometimes the Pro Pointer goes wacky. I also change or rerun the program if near others. A program I got for Two Tone Ferrous says use 2 or 3 so I do.

I don't even noise cancel unless I am detecting and get interference

Most "dedicated & experienced" detectorists in the UK recommend noise cancelling every 30 mins or so...for "technical reasons" i've never quite grasped, but if they say do it...i do it!

I found the propointer can interfere with the Etrac sometimes without noise cancelling, and with the headphones...it's a shock and hurts! lol. So i always carry out the proceedure above and have no problems. Just saying.

it's the first thing I do when I get out of the car and start hunting...check and make sure all my gear is in hand, noise cancel and then start hunting....Mike's got it right...and he's the one who taught me about it... :laughing9:

Minelab recommends running noise cancel every time your location changes. Who am I to think I know better than the manufacturer?

its not about being arrogant, its simply wanting to get the most (best performance) out of your detector. i dont know maybe its just my personality.....if i get into a hobby, or in this case specifically the etrac, i try to learn as much as i can about it. Ill push the machine as far as i can. why not?

No attack here moonshine. I agree with you 100%. My point is the noise cancel searches for the quietest settings, (my belief is it sets each channel to a set 29 matrix-ed frequencies for each channel, shifting t and test). So the best setting is the one you get by using noise cancelling. Minelab is unique I found Andy Sabishes book good. I think to truly understand it all you wood need instruction from a Minelab rep or possibly an above average and well trained dealer. I do agree learning your machine can only help.

i apologize for coming off a bit too negatively in both of my posts on this thread.

all im saying is this, if i knew for sure that a certain channel would be better for copper/silver coins, which is my primary target, i would use it, even if it was a good deal more "chatty" than a quieter channel. if no channel is truly better than another, that would be fine too. it is what it is. the thing is, everyone seems to have a different opinion and thats confusing.

the only thing ive really noticed is that my etrac always puts me at 6 through 11 if i noise cancel. i need to play around in my test garden more...thing is, if i have time to play around there, id rather go detect somewhere "real" lol

good luck out there you guys! :icon_thumleft:

Thanks every one for chiming in on the topic. .
Moonshine - I have had the detector select any of the Chanel's 1 - 11. The areas I hunt vary quite differently.
Born2Dtect - I was Noise canceling often ,but of late, if the channel is producing good digs I've been leaving it there until I notice any interference . then I do noise cancel and continue to detect.

I rarely use it and if I do I let the machine choose which channel to use.
