Eagle Belt Buckle (Civil War?)

Found this tonight at a spot we have been hitting hard the past few weeks. We have pulled out four New York Seal Civil War Buttons, two Marine Corps Civil War Buttons, and one GAR Button. This was a big surprise because there is not many high tones left at the spot. I got a 83 hit on the AT Pro at two inches and thought for sure it was a can. At around four inches down a large piece of copper popped out which was bent in half. I slowly unfolded it and there was a large eagle staring back at me. It is about three inches long and two inches wide and I have not been able to find another like it on the internet. If anyone knows what the age of this is, it would be a great help.

looks like a pre civil war militia plate but it is absolutely gorgeous! congratulations!

I found it in Sydney Kerksis book Plates and Buckles of the American Military 1795 - 1874, page 231, militia waist belt plate, brass, circa 1850, 1.72" x 3.00", rarity of 6

Hell, I have a CS buckle that was hit by a disk or plow and shot out of a baler, twisted and folded and torn...

but like you its mine and I'm proud to be the owner...

Nice piece of military history. Its weird that the largest relic to come out of that spot was the last one you found. Nice save. I thought that area was cleaned out for sure.

Lol shot out of a hay baler damn that CSA went through some hell ... I agree with hit by a harrowing disk . It's screams John Deere approaching at 12 o clock ahhhhhhhhh

What a stunning and beautiful piece of our history, you've done really well. Since the buckle is so rare, I would look into having it properly restored/conserved. I bet its very valuable.
