Eagle with Shield and Button that says "God helps those who help themsleves"
This is our fourth trip to the Oklahoma homestead site and we found some unusual stuff today. The first thing found is a metal button with some of the original gold gilt on it. It says on the front "GOD HELPS THOSE WHO HELP THEMSELVES" around the edge and in the middle has a picture of a farmer with a plow horse and a rising sun and cabin. I cleaned a little on the button but am afraid to do to much--any suggestions on how to clean it more? or should I just leave it alone? It also has some writting on the back--makers mark I think and has the steel shank still attached. I also found a piece that I'm not certain what it is. The piece has an eagle with spread wings and feet. In the feet are arrows and something else. In the middle of the eagle is a shield. The eagles head is turned to the left. There are little loops(4) on the ends where it has attached to something. Any help on this or what is was would be appreciated! Also how could I clean it more without damaging it? It is made of brass(?) I think. The other button found is a very fragile piece and is flaking off around the edges. It says "A.J. TO
CO. BOSTON". Any help with this would also be great!! The last things found were a 1917 wheat penny, a broken thimble, a buckle, some kind of lid that has a hinge, and a copper/brass half loop thingy with notches in the ends(
). We are going back to this site everytime we can until we stop finding things! This place just keeps giving up stuff. Thanks for looking~~~~~sandcreek4
