Early 1800's Artillery Button (UPDATE) Photo after cleaning.
Hunted a small park in Columbus, Oh that had given up some Indian Head pennies and a little silver. Got a strong signal at about 7" and dug this Artillery Button. Research shows that it was manufactured between 1808 - 1821. It is a solid 1 piece button with the hilt still intact. The words "Extra Strong" are on the back. This is my first button ever found.
UPDATE... Soaked it in olive oil overnight and gave it a light brushing. Alot of the crud came off and you can read the back now and see more detail on the front. After some great advice from leddel on what to use to clean it with, this was the result. There was alot more gold gilt than I thought there would be.
Thanks for looking!!
