"Ecology" Day

Today, At the 4-h camp we have 30 children here studying Ecology and basic Tree identification. The kids will be staying the night and hopefully take a little lesson of the Appalacian's with them. Pictured below is A Juvenile "Eastern Newt" Notophthalmus viridescens. Say that 3 times fast! An Adult would turn green in color. Did you know? That there are more species of Salamanders in the Appalacian mountains than anywhere in the World? Yep!

Hes a cool bugger
They almost don't look real, huh?
I bet they'd be good to use for fishing . Probably catch a Big Mouth Bass with a small mouth salamander :D.

Re: "Ecology" Day

hEy 4H, those are interesting pics of the salamanders. Are they warty like that? Or is that bits of stuff
they crawl through? Can you handle them or are they poisonous?

Thanks for sharing

Re: "Ecology" Day

Karenray, They are incredibly dosile and smooth skinned. Thats just leaves and stuff on him. And yeah I guess Takoda if you were that hungry they would be good bait. I'd feel guilty stickin one of these little critters on a trebble hook!lol!

Re: "Ecology" Day

It was a joke! lighten up! I grew up hunting and was a guide for many years! I continue to hunt and fish and feel Hunting certain wild game is neccesary to control over populations of, lets say deer. Other than Trout, (which I release) I eat venison and very occasionaly use live bait. Other than that I feel "bait fishing" is just not spotsmanlike. Just my opinion. I tie my own fishing flies to "imitate" food for fish. For sport.......
