I have a spot that has never been all that productive .But it is close so I check it out once or twice a year . One morning I was digging and I found an 006.webp001.webp embossed milk bottle .That was my best find ever for the small dump .A few minutes later I found a crushed 5 gallon can . Under that can was the tobacco sign .It was facing with the print up and the can was covering the print .I think I need to go back and dig deeper .It appears that the better stuff is 8 to 10 inches under ground

nice finds defiantly dig there

To my knowledge no one has dumped there in the last 50 years .For that sign to be in that good of condition it took the exactly right conditions for it not to be rusted away to nothing

Generally the deeper you dig the better. Where you found 1 sign there may have been more dumped so I'd be back in there digging for more ASAP, those are some nice finds. Also, always check out the rusty cans, sometimes there are goodies nested inside. Once I dug an old rusted bucket with 36 intact "Liquid Opodeldoc" bottles inside and spilled out nearby, it was interesting.

Plumbata Any time I find a large crushed can or piece of metal I start to dig very cautiously .I have found many good bottles that where protected by being covered . Do you have a pic of the36 bottles you found in the bucket. That had to be a great day of digging

It was a while ago but yes, here's an in-situ shot of the bucket as the bottles started coming out, and a group of 28 that were perfect (don't really remember but I think 8 had chips and weren't included, and many more were broken and naturally left behind)

They aren't rare or special but it was a very fun and interesting dig, it was in a mid-late 1920s layer and the bottles are all BIM so must have been gathering dust in a basement for 15-20 years before getting tossed.

Nice I know I would have been smiling. What makes it special is that many in good condition all at one time
