I am 13 years old and have been detecting for almost two years. Lately i have been trying to find old parks or homes to detect. but all parks are illegal to detect. however percy warner park is right next to my grand parents house and even though you cant detect the actual park there is a grassy parking lot right next to it. please comment if you think it is legal or not and if grassy parking lots have any good things in them often.

My guess there will be something to find there. People often drop coins when they retrieve their keys from their pocket at the car or approaching it. It cant hurt to try! I suggest you try to do some research on old sites where homes may have sat. Also try knocking on some doors to get permission on places that may produce some finds. I would bet at your age it would be harder for most people to say no. :) Best of luck and I look forward to seeing some finds. Shane

My guess is that the parking lot is part of the park. The city is not going to build anything on private land. As for as being able to detect the parking lot, your are going to have to ask the city about that.

If the people at the park are parking in it just go hit it, dnt worry bout askin for a park parking lot

I'm old and I have been detecting for a while. If the lot is part of the park and it's illegal to hunt them, then you have to put two and two together.

Explain illegal. lol I've called and asked to detect parks and over the phone they say no. But I've gone to the same parks in person and nobody ever cares. They usually just ask if I have found anything. It all depends on how strict the "law" on metal detecting is there. My MAIN suggestion to you is to ask around and try to get into some home sites. You have something going for you as far as your age. You're still young and in school...asking friends, teachers and letting them know you're in the hobby and are interested in detecting homes and if they know of anyone or anywhere you could go.

this is the image of the parking lot. in the first pic the green is the park and the lot shown in the second pic is the parking lot which in the first pic is not shown as part of the park. there for the rules of the park shall not apply. does anyone fallow my logic.

My best advice is if you go, just be kind and considerate of the property. Dig neat holes, replace all sod and dirt and remove all trash. If someone stops you and tells you to leave, just kindly say you're sorry and didn't realize you couldn't detect there and you will leave immediately. Laws CAN be very strict, but as far as I can tell this is a public place and it's not a historical area. It isn't like you're sneaking into a marked battlefield and digging relics. Good luck.
