I would almost bet it was handed out when the penny was new. Maybe some sort of token for taking a test drive or buying a car. I don't know why it was serialized unless that was just the manufacturer's way of filling an order.

I would send an email to customer service at the Chevrolet Division of General Motors if you have no luck elsewhere. They will have a record of the dealership.

I would try the local library. Sometimes they have a collection of old phone books. If they don't they may be able to find it through interlibrary loan. If you know anyone in Washington, DC the Library of Congress has (as far as I know, a copy of all phone books going back to the late 1800's. Maybe they would go look it up for you.

Good luck with the search.

Common advertising item in the 50's. Many of the ones I've seen were shaped like a horseshoe with the penny inside and decorated with shamrocks. The number may be a phone number. 4 digit phone numbers were common then too.

I think that company is a successor to The Lownsbury Motor Sales Co. that sold Chevies in the 30s, when they were located at 403-6th Street in Toledo. You might try an eMail to the Lucas County Public Library in Toledo.

Any chance there was a Loop Attached at one time.

Could have been a Key Chain Fob.

I'm pretty sure the four letter number is a dealer code number.
