Hi All, Got out today before the rain hit. Decided to give the Old Drive In one more try before tick season. It closed in the mid 1980's and so far it's only provided some clad and a wheat. Just can't seem to find the old play area near where the screen used to be. When it closed everything was torn down and removed.
As far as my question goes, has anyone enjoyed the absolute trashiness of an old Drive In? Talk about pull tabs and old soda twist off tops. I don't think anyone even tried to throw these things out properly. I have learned that if it's within 1 inch depth its usually a pull tab. There must be thousands of these things just sitting on the surface of the old gravel pavement.
Anyway I did manage to come across this very nice old theater speaker. It was sitting beneath some tall grass next to where I was swinging. Should clean up well. Total: 0 coins , Gazillion pull tabs and tops, 1 speaker. Aw well. At least I wasn't shut out for the day..

Very cool find.

I havn't seen one of them in years

The drive-ins around here switched to AM broadcast

Cool speaker. A buddy of mine actually got one about 30 years ago. He just forgot to take it out of the window ( which was rolled up at the time ), when he pulled away.LOL. I think he still has it.

Now that's a neat find!

Looking at the cord it may have been the same thing as it was pulled apart not cut.. Can't wait to see if it still works. They really made these things to last awhile.. Midnightguy

I would consider that a sucessful day!! Great find!!

Great find I bet that drive-in holds alot of coins

I've hunted my local drive-in. There are plenty of coins, but the limestone gravel is hard on them.

That's a cool find!
I can remember a few times driving off with them still in the window :(

Many years ago I hunted the Skyway drive in theatre in Oak Ridge, Tennessee and found some silver but it was in terrible shamp from being ran over in the gravels. It was a lot of hard work too!!!

Have you any idea where the concession stand was? If on dirt like the drive in I remember from my youth, that would be a great coin collectors. People fumbling with money in the dark equals dropped coins. :D

There's an old drive-in up the road not too far, dish pan depression that they now use for the flea-market from March to October....One of these day's I'll need to check that out.Very nice "relic" ;D

I've got 2 near me that I'm just dying to hunt, but I don't have permission. Nice find, that speaker is a real prize

Dude, I would love to have several of those large old aluminum or cast metal speakers. Use them for the hanging surround sound in the garage. I guess I could change out the speakers in them. Right? There is a new drive-in near me. Been there a couple of years. I am thinking of asking permission to hunt it!! GL and HH

I hunted an old drive-in grounds in the town I grew up. It was real close to where I lived,
so I could just walk over and hunt it. It was so trashy, that most of the locals didn't want anything
to do with it. So, I remembered where the concession stand was, and I started marking of 6 foot
by 6 foot areas, and working them out. Unbelievable what's under that carpet of pull tabs, and
screw caps. This was back in the early 80's, and I didn't keep track of my finds, but I found around
100 silver coins, and a handful of gold rings. I just had to imagine the couples tiff, and off comes the
ring, and out the window! :) To bad slightly used keys were not worth anything, as I filled up
a 1 gal. paint can with just keys. Drive-ins are tough work, but well worth it.

Most kiddie play areas in the earlier drive-ins were in the front, just below the screen. To determine where the screen would have been, determine where the sun sets in the summer and then turn 180 degrees around. They would not have put the screen so that facing it would put the setting sun into viewers' eyes. Those old drive-ins can be great. Maybe try it again?

I remember those! We have a defunct drive-in about 3 miles from my house. It's one of those spots I fully intend to check out someday. I think my brother is on good terms with the owner of the property, so it looks good for me. My brother lives about 200 feet down the road and I thought I'd ask my nephew if he still has his MD. If he does, he'd probably like to go over with me.
